Oh Brothers and Sisters, Where Art Thou?

Oh Brothers and Sisters, Where Art Thou?  I have posted more than sixty articles on this blog…all about my art experiences and my points of view.  Even though I am not always the subject, I am the voice.   So, this particular article is a request of sorts.

If my blog template would allow it, I would ask you to write the article and I would write the comments.  You would tell me your thoughts about art and your art experiences. You would tell me your point of view. I would comment by asking questions, letting you know that I love your ideas, learning from you, bantering with you, and applauding your sharing.

So…even though I cannot physically flip this article, let’s turn it upside down in spirit. I want comments, long or short, from each of you. If you are an artist: What do you do? Where is your website?  If you are a connoisseur or curious: What are your art thoughts?  What interests you? Where you have been and what have you seen?

And, finally, give me feedback and suggestions.  What would you like to read? What should I skip?  I want your ideas and thoughts. After all, my blog is produced largely in a vacuum. Help me by introducing fresh air.

Yours. Truly.

Just keep writing. Your comments and observations are interesting and appropriate to the work you are doing. I like being a listener at this time of my life as I was a "speaker" for so many years. I am past the point of wanting to travel a lot so I enjoy hearing about others experiences and now being able to see what the other person sees. Keep posting. Your work is enjoyable to view.

Thanks Ellen...I too, enjoy hearing about others' experiences. I just read a book, A Curious Mind: The Secret to A Bigger Life by Brian Grazer. I think you might find it enjoyable, validating, and inspiring. I did.

I love creating my art whether it be the tapestry weaving, stitchery, assemblages, jewelry or whatever. I love to think about what to make and create even in my dreams. It seems to be what keeps me going. I have numerous ways to create, most possibly because I get bored easily and need new stimulation and because different arts stimulate different parts of me. But it all gets down to making things and it has always been so.

Jan...I am always amazed at the wide range of your imagination. I hope you don't mind, but I would like others to see your Facebook page Persimmon Goat Designs.

Hi Jackie,
I always enjoy your blog. I have hurt my back doing the work of a much younger man, building a brick and wooden deck in my front yard. So now I must rest and give myself more time painting and sculpting of which I should have been doing anyway. My art... I have been called a " Outsider artist " I am not sure what is meant by that. Maybe because I don't fit into the Art Mode of painting Plain Air or Landscape or still life's. Or sculpting traditional works. I feel like there so many, probable many good artists that do
well in "Traditional " art work, that I don't need to compete in that realm. Though in the past, many years trying to compete was very frustrating and really not much fun. I now find that I have found my " Voice" being creative in my own way and not concerned , well a little, about what others think about my work. Thanks for listening, Alan

I love your art and really enjoy your musings. One of the extraordinary parts of travel for me is experiencing the new colors and patterns of each new place. Most of my photos are of color and pattern that don't want to forget. I have never painted or drawn, but I love the act of creating quilt and other textile designs. I hope someday that I will make quilts that reflect the patterns and colors I experienced. I wish I could attach some of the photos from my thousands of pattern/color photos.

Hi Jackie! I've enjoyed, very much, your blog. You have a talent for writing and making me think!
I'm constantly thinking about painting and why I do it. The reasons are numerous, but over the last 2 years, I feel I have turned a corner as to the "why". It's no longer about skill so much as it is about me- what I feel about a certain place or thing,,and how to convey that to the viewer. A constant struggle, but rewarding at times.
Please continue with your writings😊

Jacki – I loved your 8/4 blog. It's nice to know others think like I do.

As to your questions:
What do you do? I mostly paint. Sometimes I draw, but I love using oil bars to create large paintings. I can use brushes, and other tools, but am finding I LOVE using my fingers!

Where is your website? http://maris-sherwood.artistwebsites.com/ I also have pages on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fine-Art-by-Snowy-Owl/210960208945247?ref=bookmarks and

What are your art thoughts? -Art is my passion. I draw and paint what I see, what I dream, what I want to share with others. I believe Art is a cultural expression of our society; it creates freedom of expression, inspires mental and spiritual peace, stimulates our minds, and our emotions; it encourages us to be more creative. It gives us beauty to warm our souls.” -It's never too late to discover your purpose and passion in life; never too late to reinvent yourself, or to begin a new relationship”
What interests you? I love animals – I have 3 dogs, 3 cats and 4 birds. I love painting wildlife – mostly elephants and big cats, and of course, horses (they are the love of my life!). I have a friend who is a photographer in Africa, who is always sending me photos – telling me to -see what you can do with this!”

Where you have been and what have you seen? I love road trips throughout the Southwest. I love Wyoming – I spent many summers there at my great aunts ranch when I was young. That's where I fell in love with horses! I love the Grand Canyon. Each time I go there it's different! I LOVE California – I can't think of any other place I'd want to live at this time in my life….. mountains, deserts, beaches – we have it all here; my favorite places – Yosemite and Laguna Beach!!

I hope I haven't rambled on too much. You asked – I answered! 

Best always…
Maris

Alan...I love your work...I always smile. Furthermore, I get a glimpse of the man behind this "non-traditional" work. For those of you who have no clue, check out Alan's website... http://www.artquid.com/search/?q=alan+swartz .

Kim...I haven't seen many of your photos...a few. Perhaps you could post some on Facebook and lead us to your page. However, I will never forget the two quilts you did of the lower 48 for each of your children. They were imaginative, colorful, and textural.

Maris...Thank you for really considering my questions. As an artist, you have an extraordinary connection to the outside world. I hope folks see your interpretation of the world around you by viewing your website. They will be rewarded with color and energy. Thank you so much.

Martha...You got me thinking. Do you think that, as artists, we need to attain a certain level of skill before we can explore the "why"? I am wondering if mastery gives us permission to have personal artistic feelings. Perhaps I will see you tomorrow and we can pursue this!

I'm so glad to see all the responses you received, Jacki. I love your blog and often re-read past postings when the new ones appear. Can an artist be an artist without ever putting the visions to pad? Now that my long-needed shoulder replacement has occurred and physical therapy is soon to start, I have hopes of eventually committing to the classes that will give confidence to the physical movement of vision to palette. In the meantime, I watch, admire, close my eyes, envision the strokes and feel the joy of others' works. Very satisfying for now.

Dorcia...Thank you! Glad you're feeling better. Looking forward to seeing the transition from physical therapy to artistic expression.
